A Brief History of Clan MacDuff

The MacDuff clan motto is "Deus juvat" (God assists). They are a Lowland Scottish clan who held lands in Fife.

The clan claims its lineage from the original royal Scoto-Pictish line of which Queen Gruoch of Scotland, wife of Macbeth, King of Scotland, was the senior representative.

The Scottish Parliament passed a law in November 1384, establishing Clan MacDuff as the first Scottish clan to receive official recognized clan status.

Once a proud castle held by the MacDuff Earls of Fife, MacDuff's Castle in East Wemyss, Fife now lies in ruins. The property eventually came into the hands of the Clan Wemyss who constructed the current castle.
